Why it happens
Feb 17 2022

Have you ever had something bad happen and the things people try to say to encourage you only make it worse?

Yeah, me too.

Once upon a time I fell off a cliff and broke both of my ankles. It was the day before I was supposed to go on sabbatical for a month in Italy. I was more angry about having to cancel the trip than I was about my ankles. The only thing that made it worse were the encouraging things people tried to say to me:

“I guess you weren’t supposed to go to Italy for some reason.”

“Maybe something worse was going to happen to you there.”

“You guys are really under attack right now.”

“Everything happens for a reason.”

Yeah?  Maybe.  Kind of. I don’t know . . .

While I was recovering I had plenty of time to think about why I fell. I came up with a theory of why bad things happen. In fact, it helps me think about why everything happens. It may help you the next time you step in it. Check this out if you want the story of how it happened. Come Sunday and we can talk about why.
